Sandra’s Closet for Montblanc “Stories to Tell”

Dear “Stories to Tell” readers,
may I introduce myself: My name is Sandra Bauknecht and I am the Editor of my own luxury and lifestyle blog “Sandra’s Closet”. As you read these lines here, I am in Los Angeles, where Montblanc will present an amazing project this weekend. It will be a fascinating experience for me and Montblanc, and you will soon read more about it – I promise.

During my visit at the Montblanc headquarters in Hamburg, Germany, in October 2012, I have had the pleasure to take a peek behind the walls of this fascinating company, discovering Montblanc’s Nib Manufacture, the Bespoke Nib Service as well the house’s Artisan Atelier of precious writing instruments, which was a truly special and wonderful encounter. I have rarely seen a company with so many passionate and enthusiastic employees that absolutely seem to enjoy their work. Culture, quality, craftsmanship and continuity – these are the core values which Montblanc carries proudly into the 21st century!

It was then that I obtained the chance to live out my own passion for writing and the written word in an incredible creative project together with Montblanc. Along with the Montblanc team I spent inspiring hours to create my own bespoke ink “Sandra’s Berry”. It was designed in accordance with my specifications and wishes and it is the first personalized ink Montblanc has ever created. What a unique launch it has been!

With the new project Montblanc will continue the company’s honorable commitment towards the written word. I will keep you posted during the weekend on my own blog “Sandra’s Closet” as well as Montblanc’s Twitter channel! So don’t forget to check out @world_montblanc on Twitter! Stay tuned for more details!

The new Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours

Montblanc comes with a new variation on the iconic Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph, with an absolutely brilliant way to indicate time. The hour indication is not just a 12-hour indication, it immediately makes clear wether it’s day or night.

I guess it’s safe to assume that you know the Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph by now and if not, please check out the review that I did (click here). A perfect watch with an almost excessive amount of class and elegance. And more-over it really is an all-round timepiece, as it tells hours, minutes, day/night, day of the week, date and has a mono-pusher chronograph!

RisingHours_Geelen_01

Like all top models from the Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec collection the new Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours features an in-house movement. In this case it is the new caliber MB R220, but more about that later on. When looking at the Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours from an aesthetic point of view, you can see the typical classic and elegant style that we know Montblanc for. The dial incorporates so much information, however the dial isn’t too full or cluttered in any way. All indications are separated from each other and everything has more than enough space to be viewed in the glimpse of an eye.

RisingHours_Geelen_02

The new Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours comes in three different materials, each with it’s own dial; red gold and limited platinum with a beautiful silver-coloured dial. For this review I got to wear the stainless steel version, that features a bold anthracite/grey dial. The dial features a gorgeous Grain d`Orges (barleycorn) guilloche that adds a lot of detail when observed closely. From a distance it looks like a rich grey color.

The case measure 43 mm in diameter and 15.30 mm in height. Because of the sloping lugs, it sits more then comfortable on my average-sized wrist (18 cm), and perfectly fits under a shirt with cuff links. The cool thing about the Rieussec is that besides its board-room credibility, its chronograph offers enough sporty looks to be matched with jeans and a shirt as well.

RisingHours_Geelen_03

The Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours now also indicates the hours with a disc; a signature of the Nicolas Rieussec collection that grabs back on the first chronograph designed by a French watchmaker named Nicolas Rieussec. The hour disc features laser cut-out hour numerals in the same stylish font as the minutes. Below the hour disc is a disc with blue and black parts, that shows through the cut-out numerals. Black for day-time (between 6am and 6 pm) and light blue for night time. This makes it not only easy to see wether it’s day or night on your watch, however it also makes it easy when you’re adjusting time or date.

Flip over the watch and you’ll see a magnificent caliber. The Montblanc in-house caliber MB R220 is an automatic movement with a 72-hour power reserve. It has a beat-rate of 28,800 vph and comprises of 343 individual parts, of which 42 jewels.

RisingHours_Geelen_04

Center of attention is the balance that is one of the few parts that is not hidden underneath the large 3/4 bridge. All Nicolas Rieussec models feature a very large screw balance, measuring 9.70 mm in diameter. The screw balance is a sign of quality, that can only be found on the best watches in the market. Fine adjustment is done by means of the screws in the side of the balance and this requires a very skilled and experienced watchmaker.

Just above the balance you can see the gear train that has a magnificent contrast with the rhodium-plated bridges, which are adorned with Geneva Stripes or Côte de Genève as it’s called in French.

RisingHours_Geelen_05

The chronograph is activated by a column-wheel mechanism, again something that stands for a level of quality that can be found in the best chronograph. The column wheel can be seen through an aperture in the bridge and.the Montblanc star in the rotor. One of the many details that will keep amazing every owner of a Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec for a long time. As can be read on the bridge, caliber MB-R220 is equipped with two barrels, which deliver 72 hours of power reserve. Because of the long power reserve, the escapement is provided with a long period of constant force, making sure the watch’s rate is very precise for a long period.

In my opinion, Montblanc released a magnificent timepiece that offers a LOT for the retail price of 10.750 Euro. The red gold comes at a price of 26.900 Euro. Oh and if you’re interested in the platinum version, make sure to be fast, as it’s limited to just 28 pieces!

More information can be found on the Montblanc website.

Montblanc presents its Great Characters Edition 2013: Albert Einstein® Limited Edition

The Great Characters Edition 2013 pays homage to Albert Einstein, whose genius redefined the universe. With milestone discoveries like the theory of relativity, Einstein revealed profound truths that gave the scientific community a way of unlocking the previously unknown mysteries of the Universe.

Montblanc’s Tribute to the genius of the world’s most revered scientist

Every Montblanc Limited Edition tells its own individual story. The exclusive writing instruments are designed and created in honour of the great individuals who, through their unique talent and vision, have made an enduring impact on mankind. True to this tradition, Montblancʼs Great Characters Limited Edition brings to life the extraordinary genius of Albert Einstein (1879-1955).

Redefining the physical Universe

Only a genius could have done what Einstein did in 1905 – he fundamentally changed the understanding of physics in this „miracle year” in which he published four different theories in quick succession. Einstein was awarded 1921 with the Nobel Prize not for his theory of relativity but for his discovery of the photoelectric effect – a theory that provided the groundwork for many important technologies we take for granted in modern life.

The special theory of relativity shook the scientific world to its core by postulating that the speed of light is a constant against which even time and space lose their absolute meaning. The limitation of the Albert Einstein Edition to 3000 pieces represents roughly one hundredth of the value so essential to Einstein‘s vision of the universe: the speed of light (299,792.458 km/s).

The formula that changed the world

Surprisingly, one of the most famous formulas of all time, E=mc2, was published almost as an afterthought – an appendix to the special theory of relativity released a number of months previously. E=mc2, describing the equivalence of matter and energy,  remains a milestone in modern physics, especially nuclear science, explaining in beautiful simplicity one of the fundamental principles of the universe. Symbolising the wealth of knowledge Einstein left to mankind, E=mc2 is decoratively engraved along with other important formulas on the Limited Edition 3000.

The Montblanc Albert Einstein® Limited Edition 3000

The platinum-plated body of the Albert Einstein® Limited Edition 3000 shines with the soft light of a distant star while the dark blue lacquer of the cap brings to mind the velvety darkness of the endless universe.

The grid on the cap is inspired by Einstein’s general theory of relativity, curving around the platinum-plated sphere on the clip just as the light coming from a distant object in space would be curved by a star or galaxy in the foreground in what is today known as a gravitational lens.

The body and cone are engraved with Einstein’s most important formulas and the handcrafted rhodium-plated 18 K gold nib features an engraving of the element named after him: einsteinium.

The Albert Einstein® Limited Edition is limited to 3000 fountain pens and 3000 convenient modes (1500 rollerballs and 1500 ballpoint pens), available in Montblanc Boutiques from January 1st, 2013.

500 hours quality test for Le Locle manufacture movements

The master watchmakers, in the Montblanc manufacture in Le Locle are committed to preserving traditional Swiss watchmaking at the very highest level, creating innovative timepieces of the utmost precision, perfection and durability. Their attention to detail is so meticulous that even those parts forever concealed within a watch’s movement must be flawlessly finished.

The 500-Hour Test in Le Locle

As part of their craftsmanship, the watchmakers in Le Locle assemble hundreds of individual parts, a feat requiring a high level of sensitivity. Later the watches face a great deal of wear and tear: working day and night, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year. The movement of a 4-hertz watch completes 28,800 semi-oscillations per hour. Until its scheduled service in three to five years‘ time, a watch performs approximately one billion semi- oscillations that have to be managed by such fragile parts as hairsprings, balance bearings and pallet levers.

In order to guarantee the perfect functioning of all watches with manufacture movements the quality- assurance team at Montblanc Montre S.A. in Le Locle developed a strict and comprehensive testing program which is integrated into the production sequence so that every watch is thoroughly examined before it’s allowed to leave the premises. This “500-Hour Test” simulates the first years of life which these watches will after- wards actually experience.

The test is carried out in several stages on the completely encased watch using methods and tools that are recognised throughout the entire watchmaking industry. Remarkable is the combination of the individual test methods and its duration of 500 hours. A clear commitment to reliability, precision and durability.
